A 32-hole loom (a Kumihimo disc) is perfect for making complex, round friendship bracelets. You will need 16 strands of embroidery floss and a circular disc with 32 numbered slits or holes around the edge and a hole in the center.
Setting Up Your Loom
Prepare the Strings: Cut 16 strands of embroidery floss (typically 4 different colors, 4 strands each) measuring roughly 3 times around your wrist plus extra for the braid ends.
Start the Braid: Tie all 16 strings into a bulky knot at one end. Push this knot down through the center hole of your 32-hole loom.
Place the Cords: Anchor the strings into the wheel's slots. Place two strands into slots on either side of the 12, 3, 6, and 9 o'clock dots. Separate your colors evenly so you have matching colors facing the same direction.
The 32-Hole Braiding PatternThe basic movement for a 16-strand (32-hole) wheel involves two simple steps that you repeat over and over:
Top to Bottom: Take the top-right string (located to the right of the top center mark) and move it down into the right side of the bottom pair.
Bottom to Top: Take the bottom-left string (located to the left of the bottom center mark) and move it up into the left side of the top pair.
Rotate: Turn your Kumihimo disc a quarter turn (90 degrees) to the left.Repeat: Continue steps 1 through 3, always moving the top-right string down, the bottom-left string up, and then turning the wheel.
Finishing the BraceletRemove the Loom: Once your braid reaches the desired length for your wrist, take all 16 strings out of their slits and gently pull the bracelet down through the center hole.
Tie the End: Tie the braid into a tight knot so it won't unravel.
Make a Closure: Braid the loose ends together, tie an end-knot, and tie off your bracelet by passing the large knot on the other end through the starting loop.
